Recognizing this to be imperative, SIU has already initiated a number of collaborative programs with universities in the USA, Australia, Canada, and UK.
Number of semesters in an Academic Year
There will be two semesters, Semester I and Semester II, in an academic year. In addition to these two regular semesters, there may be a short semester in the intervening period between end of Semester II and commencement of Semester I. During this short semester, students according to their needs may take additional courses either to make up deficiencies in credit and grade point average (GPA) requirements, or to fulfill the credit requirements for bachelor degree and thus spending less time than the normal duration.

Course Pattern and Credit Structure
The entire undergraduate programme is covered through a set of theoretical and laboratory courses, fieldwork, design and project / thesis work. Please refer to individual departments for course listings.
Assignment of Credits
I) Theoretical Courses:
One lecture per week per semester will be equivalent to one credit. Thus, a three credit hour course will have three lectures per week throughout the Semester.
II) Laboratory/Field/Design/Project/Thesis Work:
Credits for laboratory/field or design work usually will be half of the class hours per week per semester. Credits are also assigned to project / thesis work taken by students. The amount of credits assigned to each of these may vary from discipline to discipline.
Type of Courses
· core courses
In each discipline, a number of compulsory courses will be identified as core courses which form the nucleus of the bachelor degree programme.
· Optional Courses
Apart from the core courses, students will have to complete a number of courses which are optional in nature so that students may have some choice in selecting courses from a specified group or a number of courses.
International Students
For the purpose of admission, international applicants are defined as all persons who are not citizens of Bangladesh. International applicants who seek admission at SIU, must meet the same academic standards for admission as those required of local students. Since there are wider variations in educational systems throughout the world, international applicants are selected on the basis of their academic work, proficiency in English and Mathematics, probability of success in the chosen curriculum, and certification of adequate financial resources.
Transfer of Credits
Credits earned at previously attended colleges and universities will be evaluated for acceptance toward SIU degrees by qualified university academic faculty members. Transcripts from previously attended institutions must be submitted. A student who wishes to seek transfer with his earned credit to other university home and abroad may be allowed.
Graduate Admission Criteria
Although initially SIU is only offering undergraduate level courses in certain disciplines, the university intends to start graduate level programmes as soon as adequate facilities are available for incoming graduate students. Interested students of graduate programmes at the SIU are requested to contact the respective departments, and/or the dean of studies/admissions office of further information.
General Application Procedures and Application Forms
Students interested in enrolling in SIU should collect in person or send a bank draft/pay order for Tk. 300.00 or US $ 10.00 or equivalent in the name of the Sylhet International University to the Dean of Schools/Admission officer for an application form and instructions concerning the admission process.
